"Start Children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." ~Matthew 19:14

James* was a normal fifth grader when he came to Hope Summer Camp last year … or so we thought. He liked to play and goof off like most 10-year-old boys, but he would become emotional in the reading classroom. James was hiding a secret behind his hyperactivity, and Hope's devoted staff needed to get to the bottom of his distress.

They discovered James couldn't identify simple connecting words such as ‘and,’ ‘but,’ and ‘can.’ No one had discovered this crucial step towards reading comprehension, and this student was struggling!

James’s team leader worked diligently with him throughout our eight-week camp, with one-on-one instruction, and a lot of love and patience. No one was prouder than James when at the end of summer camp, he had mastered reading on a first-grade level!

James isn't alone! Many students struggle with reaching grade-level milestones and Hope Summer Camp’s team works to fill that gap. In addition to remedial reading, we focus on progression of academics such as STEM, mathematics and art. Our program includes a nutritious breakfast and lunch, character development in grades K-6, and workforce development in grades 7-12.

Our "Power Hour" lets campers loosen up while learning biblical principles. And our guest speakers teach kids about career options, life experience and character development.

Hope Charitable services offers Summer Camp at low-to-no cost, but most of our low-income Portsmouth families just can’t afford to pay. So we need YOUR help!

IT costs Hope Charitable Services around $55,000 to provide our camp for 60 children this summer … that $916 per child for eight weeks!

Please sponsor a struggling child today with a gift of any amount. We want to help EVERY child like James, but we can’t do it alone. Thank you for partnering with us to make a difference in a child's life!
